was born in Brno on May 29, 1897 and moved to Vienna soon after. He was considered a child prodigy - at the age of eleven he wrote the ballett "Der Schneemann" ("The Snowman"), which premiered at the Court Opera in 1910. His most famous work emerged after the novella of Belgian Georges Rodenbach: "Die tote Stadt" ("The Dead City"), which illustrates all the gloom and sadness of the Bruges cut off from the sea yet once so powerful. Tremendously successful debuts took place in Cologne and Hamburg on December 4, 1920. This success was to repeat itself on many stages to come.Korngold adapted the sounds of Mendelsson to the cult film "Ein Sommernachtstraum" ("A Summer Night´s Dream") with Max Reinhardt in Hollywood. Afterwards he created music for 20 films, mostly for Warner Brothers. In 1938 he received an Oscar for "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Eroll Flynn.He returned to Vienna after the Second World War, yet failed to achieve further major success here. Korngold died on November 29, 1957 in Hollywood. The stamp shows a stage set from the opera "Die Tote Stadt".
