In 1984 Tonga issued the first part of its long running (1984 to 1996) marine life set - all the stamps in this set up to 1987 were self-adhesive - peel-off backing paper. The officials decided it was time to experiment with going over to normal perforated paper stamps, so the printers were asked to reprint two of the stamps (previously self-adhesive) but this time on perforated paper as an experiment. This was done in 1987, and the printers left the date off the bottom of the stamps - these are the only two out of about 100 stamps in the period 1984-1996 without date at bottom - only a very small number were printed as an experiment, and STANLEY GIBBONS catalogues the shell sta;mp at 5 english pounds and the fish stamp at 12 english pounds (total about US$35). Even scarcer overprinted specimen as only a couple of sheets were done specimen.
