The stamps are self-adhesive and are overprinted SPECIMEN.
The design shows the ships that called at Niuafoou (Tin Can Mail Island) to collect the islanders mail - there was no airport then (in the 1930´s and earlier) and no safe landing harbour, so the natives swam or carried by canoe the mail to the passing ships.
This is TYPE 1 - there were two printings - Type 1 is where the backing paper is perforated and the imperf stamp peels off the backing paper (and there is nothing written on the back of the backing paper) - type 2 was a second printing (experiment) where the whole stamp plus backing paper was perforated just like stamps from other countries and also on the back were the words "Bend forward and peel off backing paper) and the self-adhesive stamp which peeled off was then perforated.
