Item description:

For the Tonga 1982 Commonwealth Games set, the artist from Walsall Security Printers first of all drew a design rough (a rough design of what was expected for each stamp in the set). Then the printers produced from this design rough a monochrome proofing at stamp size. This was the first proofing done for each design in this set. Sometimes the design was accepted in full, sometimes in part, and occasionally the design was rejected and another subject chosen for the issued stamp. This first proof was an important part in the design and printing process and is a rare exhibit item. There are two items for sale here - first is the monochrome proof taken from the design rough done by the artist - the design rough is stamp size and the second item is the issued stamp overprinted specimen so that any changes or differences can be seen. In this case, the design rough showed boxing, but this design was not used, and an athletics design ended up being issued as shown. Rare exhibit item from the printers archives.

MONOCHROME PROOFS were done on thin card and in black and white, and were used to check the design. A scarce item from the Tonga printers archival material.
