This is the very FIRST proofing done by Walsall Security Printers for this value. From Tonga 1986 Sporting Events set.
Once the artwork or essay was done, the printers would take a FIRST monochrome proofing direct from the artwork or essay (which was submitted by the artist). The proof was done stamp size to see how it would look. The officials were not happy, and asked the designer to design another stamp showing 3 players which was done.
The issued stamp overprinted specimen is included for comparison. The first proof included in this lot is UNIQUE. Only one of the first proofs was done. Very rare exhibit item from the printers archives.
MONOCHROME PROOFS were done on thin card and in black and white, and were used to check the design. A scarce item from the Tonga printers archival material.
