I just want to say I am thrilled to have found this site with so much in one spot. :applause: Still trying to figure it out a bit. My young daughter has decided she wants to collect Used postage stamps...YESTERDAY. Having nothing but what we had lying about the house on envelopes it was wonderful to have found this site. We know little but we are learnig...I'm learning I like FDC or pictorials, so I bought us both scrapbooks today!

Looking forward to starting this hobby!
Warm Regards,
Christine & Amber :)

hi christine and amber,
welcome to delcampe. guess we old guys better behave ourselves. and watch our jokes. we forget we have kids watching sometimes. :o and i apologize if my words and actions get out of hand. cajun is just an ol' crazy vietnam vet but a grandad of four granddaughters too. but none of them want to collect stamps. well, 3 of them is too young. and the 12 year old is more for sports. maybe some day one will be a philatelist. i am in tampa, fl. so if you are around our area, drop in and visit our stamp club. our old guys like to help out young collectors. i'm sure you will find lots of good additions for your daughter's stamp collection here on delcampe as well as information on the hobby. we are always here to answer questions and give helpful advice. there is many years of philatelic experience among we members as many of us are APS members too. take care and enjoy the site and auctions.
merci et a bientot,
cajunsr.
:D

hi christine and amber,
i see amber is collecting cat stamps. it is good to do a topical selection for a young philatelist as it will keep their interest more occupied in the hobby. and she will learn more about geography, ecology, enviroment, and many other things from her collection. it is too difficult for young collectors and expensive to collect stamps of the world. so you are doing the right thing with your daughter. :znaika: i'm sure you will not run out of 'le chats' (french for cats) on delcampe.

Hello -

just get started and enjoy. ;) Stamp collecting is a faszinating hobby, as long, as you don't see it as "investment" or what people are used to call "serious". There are lots of really nice pictorials e.g. from gulf emirates what collectors hardly accept as stamps - but they look at lot better than everything what "worthes" to be collected in their eyes.
Just collect as you want, keep away from everyone who wants to tell you how "you have to do it", that way it will bring you a lot fun and pleasure. If you buy "lots" or stamps on paper, it will be a discovery trip around the world. Enjoy...

Best regards

-ALF-

Thank you for the warm welcome Cajunsr! We selected topical interests (cats of course being one) general interesting places. My dad always collected US stamps. He collected them "for me", but unfortunately he has since passed away and my sister "left town" with his collection and my stuff as well. So I was left with nothing. I know he collected me almost every stamp(s) in blocks from about 1971-1980.

I do have a question for somebody out there. With these self sticking stamps...how do you save those without saving a whole sheet or packet of them? I remember for the "regular" ones you used the clear sleeves and slid them into them. I remember an old album my dad had of Used postal stamps that used the hinges.

When I was little I remember seeing stamps from all over the world, and liking them, but dad only bought US ones. I know he'd be happy Amber is interested in Stamps, but it's MY turn to put a twist on it! I am loving FDC and Pictorial Postmarks, so I started my own binder ;)

If I can get the littlest one interested, it would be nice....she wants to collect rocks :dunno: )

Not trying to turn you away from the internet--you should look here, too! but you may want to look for local shows and clubs; I know there's one here in Seattle at which a nice couple has a "young philatelists" table where your daughter could look through stamps and pick some out for free. I've got an 8- and 6-year old and when I take them, they're always given stamps (for free) by the kind dealers you're bound to meet. (Sure, it helps if the parent is buying some stuff, too. . . )

For collecting singles of the new self-adhesives, just use up the sheet and then trim the excess backing with scissors if you only want one.

I will have to see if I can locate the local stamp club, there's no place around here that even carries supplies anymore. It's Erie, PA and I'm about 27 blocks from the lake. We've been having Lake Effect snow since last week. (the day the 50 car pile up happened on I90 in Erie...might have seen it on CNN or the Weather Channel)

I called a local rare coin dealer today. (this is not the weather you go out in for fun jaunts) He said he didn't know of anybody carrying supplies here locally, but did say he was suprised to see a Stamp Collecting Club meeting cancelled last week. (our weather) So somebody around me must be collecting.

Still looking around on the site! (going to be in trouble)

Hello Chris,

well, I tried to give you a warning around stamp collectors, now you found out by your own ;) . The typical stamp collector is male, at least 150 y o and because of that loving to tell you how the world went around at vietnam war...corean war...WW II...WW I - for the one telling about war of 1648-48 I'm still waiting, but he will not be far, maybe he's still getting used to :pc_user: modern typing.

Ooops, guess I won some new friends now... :smash:

Beside, I heared about, that some of them are even eating crabs... :o

hi christine,
i warned a lot of people about moneycrookers a long time ago. for americans, it sucks. just for the very same reasons you are having problems. they soaked me for big bucks just to retrieve 'my' money form 'my' account. then blamed it on 'my' bank for the fees they charged. my credit union never charged me a cent. they are liars and cheats. this is why i closed my account with them. as for paying the guy in egypt, if it is a small amount, send him u.s. dollars, but not registered. costs too much. wrap it in aluminum foil and letter paper to avoid any postal worker seeing what it is. there are a lot of thieves in the egyptian and middle east postal services. or you can tell him since you don't accept PAYPAL, you can't pay him. make him get PAYPAL. if you have a problem, contact pascal. that's what he is gets paid for. hope this helps.

p.s. - add some flavoring to them icecicles and you got somethin'. :D

i warned a lot of people about moneycrookers a long time ago. for americans, it sucks. just for the very same reasons you are having problems. they soaked me for big bucks just to retrieve 'my' money form 'my' account. then blamed it on 'my' bank for the fees they charged. my credit union never charged me a cent. they are liars and cheats. this is why i closed my account with them. as for paying the guy in egypt, if it is a small amount, send him u.s. dollars, but not registered. costs too much. wrap it in aluminum foil and letter paper to avoid any postal worker seeing what it is. there are a lot of thieves in the egyptian and middle east postal services. or you can tell him since you don't accept PAYPAL, you can't pay him. make him get PAYPAL. if you have a problem, contact pascal. that's what he is gets paid for. hope this helps.
later gator,
cajunsr.

p.s. - add some flavoring to them icecicles and you got somethin'. :D

Hello Crab eater,

guess that will not be a real help. And you will have to get used to something: people even don't want USD cash, depends in what country they are, bank fees for exchange will kill them - and you never know, when it will loose next 10%...

Hello Chris,

if there is no other way, you may send the money to my PayPal account and I will proceed it to Moneybookers and pay him there. Transaction fees will be up to you, but that should be the only problem.

Best regards

Alf you are entirely a doll! :applause:

This poor guy probably thinks I'm crazy at this point. :o Alf I can use paypal no problem, I will send you a note from inkpjays@aol.com...and" class=a0108>pinkpjays@aol.com...and I'll show you my invoice from him, it's like 3.60 Euros...let me know what extra fees I need to give you.

I'll explain what we are doing then to him.

I have to run to the store here and will be back a bit later to straighten this out. I sent Moneybookers a nasty gram and blocked my credit card from them, I am not dealing with this.

Hugs to you both for being such help!

Christine

hey cousin alf,
that's might magnamous of you to help her as our friend PN has been compromised by delcampe. he would do the same for her as well. he did it for me and emailed me this morning to remind me in no uncertain terms that the 'brits drool' or somethin' like that. i do miss him on the forum. i liked pickin' on him and his mangy cats. and i'm a leo? and i like dogs? i must be bi-polar. but my advice was true, we do have problems here in america with moneybookers. it is not what it says it is. the american banking system is very funny with credit checks now that many of the banks have been compromised by hackers. this is why PAYPAL is so popular here. of course, there are a lot of scammers always trying to get into your PAYPAL account via scam emails but the wary, alert customer will know not to answer them. and i have had problems with sending cash to the middle east, esp. turkey. lost a payment with a money order, go figure with that one. how they thought they could cash an american money order is beyond me, but they stole it from the mail. and sending euros from the u.s. is almost impossible from most cities. we don't have any banks that have any. this is very true in tampa. the only place that carries any euros is the busch gardens amusement park, but you have to pay to get in there. so you see the enormous problems christine was facing. :crying2:

Just for fun I used the fish to translate this - great!!! Always use it, if you want to have some fun, it's better than any TV-Comedy (but better don't use it to translate something you want to understand...) ;)
